H2 logistics cost Portal

Cost modelling tool

The H2 Logistics Portal provides access to the Hydrogen Logistics Cost Module, a tool for assessing hydrogen transport costs based on user-defined parameters such as transport distance, daily hydrogen quantities, and target end pressure. It evaluates a set of predefined transport technologies and delivers comparative cost results to support strategic planning for hydrogen distribution. The transport options currently considered include:

  • Truck deliveries using regular trailers at 350 bar
  • Truck deliveries using swap trailers at 540 bar
  • Pipeline with three possible diameters: 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm

The tool provides a detailed comparison of logistics costs across the available options, enabling users to identify the most cost-effective solution under their specific conditions. In addition, the output supports sensitivity analyses, helping users understand how changes in key variables affect results. For users of H2Scout scenario calculator, the tool also provides hydrogen distribution cost values that can be directly integrated into the scenario configuration. The calculation logic is based on the methodology presented in the study “Techno-economic and environmental assessment of hydrogen transport by road and pipeline” (Energy Technology, 2023). However, the assumptions have been adapted to reflect the specific set of technologies covered in this tool, and certain simplifications have been made—particularly with regard to pipeline compression. We sincerely thank the authors of the referenced study for their valuable contribution to the field, which has provided the foundation for this tool.
